CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Ryan
Two days had gone by. Mason and I were kind of living in this little bubble. Mostly on account that we couldn’t go anywhere or do anything. The power was still out and it was estimated another week before they’d likely have it restored. The storm had knocked out most of the city and it wasn’t such a simple fix. Power lines had been ripped to shreds and there were trees leaning and laying on stuff everywhere. The city was one giant mess.
It had been two days of eating out of cans and taking cold showers by lantern light only. Hey, I didn’t stink and that was good enough for me.
I’d helped him take the boards off the windows so at least we had some light during the day. The whole time I’d wondered how he’d gotten them up all by himself.
There had been tons of board and card games played. I learned his weaknesses and his strengths. Well, when it came to games anyway.
I’d also learned that Mason was a man that carried a lot on his shoulders. He was someone that wanted to let go and have fun but was too afraid to do that because he had responsibilities.
Of course, this was something I’d never tell him directly. I was sure he didn’t see it and he’d probably look at me like I was nuts if I tried to explain it to him.
Whatever this was, it was going great. Like amazingly so. However, I was a little worried about what would happen when reality finally got its crap together and slammed into us again. Which was now, by the way. Because I couldn’t put off the fact that my house was currently swaddling a tree.
I’d talked to my sister a few times, mostly to reassure her I was okay. I let her be the one to relay everything to the rest of my family. There was only so much I could take right now. They were stuck out of town because the roads were still closed due to flooding and well, some of the missing chunks of highway that had been washed away. It was my job to drive around and check on everyone’s house and report back with the damage once I was able to get out and about.
Oh, and I’d also contacted my insurance company and was on a waiting list for an inspector to come out and assess the damage. Who knew how long that was going to take? Huge eye roll here, yep.
Mason offered to look at my place and even had a few tarps in his garage he was hoping to get up on my roof. I didn’t think it would do any good at this point, but he’d insisted that not only would it prevent further damage, it would also show the insurance company that I was serious about salvaging my house. I was skeptical about both of those things. However, I realized Mase wasn’t someone I could say no to when it came to things like this.
